RE: [AskAVet] colic

There are problems adding salt to feed. It is easy to give too much and that can be a real problem. Allow free access to a salt block. If the horse does not drink much water, check the water quality. It needs to be in a clean trough or tub. When you clean the water trough, don't use detergents that are hard to wash away.
Horses may prefer cold water, but in cold climates the water needs to be liquid (not ice). If the water is 'off' due to the water supply, some horses will drink it better if you put apple juice in it. Doesn't take much, but should be just a bit sweet to taste.

Subject: [AskAVet] colic

My 21 yr old QH gelding sometimes gets a belly ache after eating his grain and the other night he coliced.
He is on pasture 24/7 unless it is very cold or wet and cold..such as tonight. When in the barn, he gets a bunch of good quality hay in his stall.
I am feeding him Purina Senior food. Only about 2 cups at night and 2 cups in the morning. He is a hard keeper. Hence the grain.
This has been a problem in the past...occasionally. Maybe 2times per year. However, he coliced 10 days ago and had a belly ache tonight. I at first thought he was going to colic but, he has since had 3 nice piles of manure in his stall, is eating hay and his stomach is making some gurgling sounds.
This guy does not eat salt and doesn't consume as much water as my other three. I am wondering if I should put salt in his food? Also, is it possible that he has an ulcer? Then again, this has only happened immediately after his grain has been eaten..and not all the way eaten. He left about a half of cup both times that he had episodes recently.
I am confused and the vet of course is closed tomorrow.
Any thoughts? I will be up checking on him every few hours tonight but, I believe he will be ok.
thanks, Janet in Mountain View, MO with 3 equines and a donkey.
