[AskAVet] Re: colic

If I have a horse with a tendancy for a belly ache, I feed them shredded beet pulp with their pelleted feed.  I wet it down because it is so dry, but this helps get them to eat when it's cold outside because I can add warm water.  Helps with the water intake, and encourages them to eat.  Can also add salt to it to insure that they get that as well.  My horses here love it!  As a matter of fact, with the drought and hay being so scarce, ALL the horses here are eating it and I have 46 horses here!  It's a bit of work to feed that many, but it's working.  I have found that some horses are VERY SENSITIVE to weather changes.  If the pressure changes drastically, a few will get to feeling yucky and display some of the colic symptoms such as stretching out, lying down, going off their feed.  It seems to last until the front comes through, then they're better again.  You might watch the conditions when your horse behaves like this and see if there's a
common denomonator....

If your horse is a hard keeper, 2 cups of feed 2x a day doesn't seem like much....
