[AskAVet] Horses with the lice

Phew, it takes ages to bath even one horse!

I did the worst mare first, had to microwave the coconut oil which goes solid in the bottle.  (Last time I washed this mare was three years ago for rain scald and she never forgave me!!!  When the vet came about the lice and her tummy ache, she bit me instead of kicking him where he was fiddling with her ha ha she hated me!!)  But the utter relief on her face when I washed her today was amazing and instead of biting and kicking the hell outta me, she stood there like a baby and  had a big yahoo-like rear from happiness after it about five times!  The stallion went crazy to see her all wet and shiny and on her hind legs ha ha!!  I put coconut oil on her dry and massaged in with the liquid soap, waited 10 mins then rinsed.  She LOVES the coconut oil, was licking it!!!  By rinsing stage, I did not see any live lice at all!!!!  Certainly wiped them all out in a flash.

Then I did the white vinegar and combed it thru, backwards and every which way on her coat.  She had a tonne of eggs, which you see more clearly when you wash them.  Most of them were flying off as I combed.  But there are still probably a good 100 left on, though I am not sure how firmly they are attached.  But the majority are gone.  That mare's sheer happiness when I did this was beyond belief!  Other than fixing the lice,  I think it fixed our rocky relationship forever!!!  Will these eggs hatch?

I am still waiting on the ivermectin wormers to arrive. I think by the time I bathe every horse it will be time to bathe them again in the 10 day's time.

Bayer Company got back to me about a product called TIGUVON which is a blue pour on down their back line and for cattle lice.  While the label does not say use it on horses, they said from what they hear it is ok and just do not do it on mares in foal.  But that if I were to use it, to do so at my own discretion.  They said like my boss said to me, the only thing is some horses may suffer a bit of hair loss at the site of application of TIGUVON.  So I only have one mare I can't bathe, so just in case, as I have a stallion, I will buy her the horse "Lice N Simple", so that I can make no error.  You never know what stallions may get up to, they are sneaky!!!  I can't imagine her being in foal, but on the off chance, just paying $30 extra to treat her will avoid a catastrophe.

The TIGUVON works out 1/4 price of a horse lice pour on.  And there is also the powder Pestene.  There is enough to do 200 horses in TIGUVON for about $120 or so.  The powder is on the internet to order, but the TIGUVON seems to be nowhere!!  But I believe the shops have it locally.

They are my ideas so far.  Before I go shopping, though, in respect of the powder Pestene which is good for horses and the TIGUVON, can I just ask opinions on what you think is best, should I have to go in this direction?  I could probably get the powder onto all of them.

So, which way is best.... for the six I can't bathe?  Just the powder, recommended for horses?  Or the TIGUVON pour on, recommended for cattle that will work but may give a bit of hair loss, with the horse one "Lice N Simple" for the mare?  I do not have show horses, so hair loss is of no consequence.  Apparently it grows back nicely after.  My boss only had hair loss in one horse after many years of using it.

So, powder, or pour on?????

Kim xoxo

Sugar is actually a gray with some "pink" spots around her ears and face. She has had a melonoma develop under the doc of her tail
before and it did go away. This one in her ear is strange looking, it looks as if someone took a block of skin and set it in her ear. It is solid to the touch but not tender only the canal and outer area of the canal is tender. As I said before she does have water in it as well. Our other gelding whom is also gray has a large conglomeration of small melonomas on his right side close to the flank area but they do not cause him any pain or problems. I thank you for your information it is very helpful! Jessica Johann

Actually grays have the highest cancer rates....they tend to develop melanomas.

If the has black skin under the white hair, she is actually "gray". If she's "white" she would have pink skin. Pink skin is more susceptible to cancer. I'd have her vet checked if at all possible.

Her left ear from about the middle inside down towards the ear canal is swollen (almost like a tumor) and there is also water trapped inside. The under side of her ear is puffy but does not feel hot to the touch. It is very tender to the touch and we have a hard time trying to keep her head still in order to clean it. The ear canal is almost swollen shut (to the point where you might be able to insert the tip of a q-tip if you are lucky) and she has been scratching at it quite a bit. I am unable to get the vet out at this time due to the fact we owe them money from a previous visit and times are extremely tight right now. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the water from her ear and manage the swelling? Is it safe to give her bute if she is pregnant? What is a safe way for her as well as us to work with her
ear

She can be quite a snot when she wants to be. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Can we use warm olive oil like we do in our childrens ears? Do you think that might help? I am also looking into purchasing a flymask with ears to protect her from further damage. Thank you in advance!Jessica Johann
