Re: [AskAVet] Re: Rain Rot???

My husband is a general farm manager for a local vet and on our horses 90 of them for rain rot  we use something from the garden dept.
Yu mix the powder in a bucket of water and  sponge it onthem fromhead to toe and  that is it.. we have never had to repeat  the sponging.
WE use Captan .. u find it in the garden dept or at ur local feed store .. make sure it is for the garden.. it is a r ed and yellow  box i still have some that comes in a bag like seven dust.
Mix  like a cupful of Captan powder to a 2 and a half gallons and make sure it is warm water and sponge it onyour horse.. start  on the feet and work your way up.. any brushes u  brushed the hosre will have to be soaked in this solution to kill the fungus.
Let me if you decide to use the Captan..
My husband's  boss is an old time vet and he uses this on his horses as well and tells his patients on their horses as well.

I have used MTG along with the Betamine...he still has it. An old horse woman told me about the Betamine and Baby oil, and it has worked in the past on other horses, just not this batch.
It doesn't have a pattern, except it always starts on the rump, then spreads down. I have also heard Captan works, but is it safe for horses?
I will get Athlete's Foot Spray today and try it.
Thanks for all the good answers, and have a wonderful Independence Day!

Why baby oil? I can understand the other ingredients, but I would think
baby oil would hold the infection in as it coats the skin. It will also cause
burning on skin exposed to the sun. I know! I used to put it on myself as
a teenager and go out and suntan (burn!) - bad idea! And, are you sure its
rain rot? Is it in only certain areas? Is it in any kind of pattern?
