Good clean grass hay. Add plain grain if needed for condition. Have a trace mineral block and clean water available at all times.

Subject: [AskAVet] Top Brands of Horse Feed?
Hello. I hope folks can help me out. I'm getting an 8 y.o., 15.2 hand, hefty, healthy, easy keeper, Rockey Mountain Horse, and am trying to decide what to feed him from among the choices available to me here (in Pittsburgh, PA). I would go with McCauley's but it's not sold around here and I'd have to order a huge amount. (Horse feed has only a 3 month shelf life so having too much doesn't work...). What I want to know is this: what are among the best feeds for horses?
For my dogs, I know exactly which feeds are tops. The *Whole Dog Journal* publishes a list every year and I evaluate from there. Why can't I find "Top Horse Feeds* lists? I've searched the Internet and can't come up with reliable information. Most sites by nutritionists say 'look for this and this'. There's too much information for me. I just want to know, with what brands is my horse likely to do best? I don't want to become a nutritionist myself.
Many thanks for reliable information about top brands! You can email me privately at dogquirks@comcast.net if you don't want to give your opinion on the list.
Regards,
~ Lynn
