Re: [AskAVet] do horses have strokes?

My gelding had a stroke a year ago. He ate wet timothy and alfalfa pellets, wet senior and beet pulp for 3 months. when he started eating hay I backed him off the pellets. I ride him on trails and in the arena. he doesn't have the stamina he used to and when he gets tired he drags his left hind. The vet told me to put him down but I knew i could get him through it. They can recover. He lost all muscle tone in his left cheek and would fall down if he tried to run in the field. But he bounced back pretty well. He runs barrels again too. The stroke was pretty bad he was blind in his left eye at first too. Good luck and give your horse a chance to recover.

I have a mare who had a stroke. I wet her grain down, pelleted Sr. , to a mush. She can eat that, and I also wet her hay. Takes a long time for her to eat but she does. Grass is much easier for her. It's been 12 yrs since her stroke. I quit riding her, found that the stroke had effected her equilibrium when she made any quick turns.

The tongues sticks out one side of the mouth and we cannot tell if it hurts or the mouth doesn;t work. Could this be a stroke? If so what would you suggest for feeding her? She cannot do grass or hay/grain?
