Re: [AskAVet] colt rubbing himself raw

Hey OJ,

Barring a behavioral cause, he could have lice. My horse picked them up
from goats and was miserable. Fly sprays generally aren't effective. I
had to buy a lice dip and sponge it on him to get rid of them. It's rare
for horses to get them, but it does happen. If he's stamping in the
stall that's probably it. Fleas will case stamping too. They can come in
hay and straw, from chickens, goats and pigeons. Once you rule out a
physical cause, then I would look at his environment. Don't forget it
might be pain related too. Chronic pain can cause biting and rubbing.

What kind of bedding are you using? If shavings are they clean pine bags
or are they loose/truck delivered? There may be a toxin or allergy
involved. Cedar will cause "scalding" if a horse is sensitive. Fly
sprays and shampoos can also cause scalding/itching as will Food
allergies (rare). Might be worth a skin scraping or blood test by the
vet to rule out an organic or chemical cause.

Just some ideas to think about. Hope you figure it out soon!

I was worried he was eating his sides like I have heard of but we noticed he is sitting and just rubbing, rubbing, rubbing. he does bite his side some but no blood or gore. i know some of it is from boredom and hay is in short supply so we have been feeding chaff hay which does not have the play time regular hay does. Any suggestions, ideas, etc. He is on a regular worming schedule. Please help. OJ
