Re: [AskAVet]Replies re Horse with loops of barbed wire hanging from tail

Hi Tanna,

Ha ha, yeah I was so grateful for your speedy replies.

I agree with your comment about a spooky horse suddenly realising how serious trouble they were actually in after nothing they did themselves helped!

Beforehand he was jumping everywhere, kicking, you name it.  I had no hope.

But just that look on his face when I walked over for another go at it after a break, and he was watching, but let me lean down and pick up the damn wire, well the fluffy material he had gathered on it!  I had his tail pulled gently taut, praying he did not kick at me.  He kept looking and wlaking around and remained calm.

I will be telling him not to do it again for sure!!!

It was scary, and I was having a heart attack over what to do!!!!  But I guess it was not as bad as when the dentist and farrier came out Friday and we both saw my neighbour's racehorses bolting down the road past us!!!  The owner was not home, but we caught the horses ok after a few minutes and got them back into safety, crazy devils!!!.  They had rugs on and had got hot, went in the dam and came back out the other side of the dam to freedom!!!  We never usually do my horses' feet and teeth down near the road, but this day I got up late, so we had no choice.  Lucky for my neighbour, as the racehorses were galloping straight for the Freeway.  He immediately came and fixed the fence and took their rugs off.

Thanks again for all of your help!!!!  Lifting a leg is such a good idea, but do you think in my panic I could even think of that!!!  No!!!  ha ha.

You're very welcome. :) So glad to read you were able to get it out!!

I've known plenty a spooky horse who seem to feel the gravity of a situation in our behaviour. They just know when it is time to accept our help.

I hope you told him not to do that again!

Thanks so much Tanna and Christy,

I appreciate the replies so fast!!! I was at wit's end!!!

Thankfully he trusted me and I got it out after he calmed down, but you know what I didn't even think of your ideas you both offered, so they are extremely useful for if it happens again!!!! I needed to know those answers you gave as I could not think straight I was in more of a panic than the horse was!!!

I did not even think of tranquilizing him, great idea and I didn't even think of lifting or tying one leg so we could get to his tail!!!

So marvellous solutions I will keep stored in my mind, if it happens again.

I hate barbed wire, too, Christy, it is everywhere here, it is such a pain isn't it, but tight on the fences, but I did not have any choice had to move during the Equine Influenza here to get them all to safety as we were stuck in the middle of the EI crisis area, we were not infected and I paid my money got my permits after horses all tested and I ran!!! And they never got infected at all. Horses in Australia got it bad, as we had never seen anything like it!!!! We were petrified!!!

But, hey thanks again so much, you replied while I was out there with him getting it off his tail, so thank you from the bottom of my heart as if it had not have worked, I would have definitely tried what you wrote!!! Plus, it is stored for future reference for sure!!!!

Dang, if it were just a few loops in his tail, it would likely get caught and pull out. But since it's dragging the ground, that's a real problem. he could get his hind legs tangled in it. I'd say you probably need to get him tranquilized, then remove it. Safest way for everybody concerned.
I hate barbed wire.

Hi,

Here's a tricky one. My horses has a piece of barbed wire in two loops the size of your computer screen hanging from his tail, twisted in the hair, no idea where it came from. He is so erratic and jumpy, I can't get it off. At least I have him in the house yard now, so he is in a smaller area to see if something happens. Tried feeding him in area where I could stand behind shed and tried to get at it, but he spooked and ran.

Tried looping baling twine in it so I could have leverage and maybe pull hard against it when he ran (in safe place) but hard to even try to get baling twine through as wire so near his back legs.

Even me holding him and someone else trying to go near tail does not work. I have been running around with the scissors, trying to even get a snip into the tail area is impossible.

He is the worst horse here to handle, very jumpy and erratic due to his past. I can get a halter on him and lead, he will go on float, worried the wire will send him crazy in float though, as would have to lock bum bar in to try to cut the tail hair. Would it be safe to run him in float and try? Very worried about this one.

Any ideas? It is tangled up just below tail bone and hanging in two loops, dragging about 5 inches behind on the ground. I am hoping it just gets caught on something and breaks off his tail hair, but so far no luck.

Subject: [AskAVet] Horse safe show sheen

Hi,

Does anyone have a natural recipe for a product to take tangles out of a horse's mane and tail please?

Vet safe and without animal by-products please.

I am looking to use something similar to Absorbine Show Sheen, you know, to just get the tangles out and give a shine. Or is it just best to use something like Show Sheen? The reason I am asking is that I end up spending a fortune on Show Sheen and I am looking at something cheaper to do the same job.

My horses do not go to shows, but I like their manes and tails to look shiny and tangle free, and don't mind a bit of a spray of the stuff on their coat to make that look nice, too.

Is it ok to use human hair detanglers on horses? I saw some cheap ones in the $2 shops, etc.

Thanks,

Kim

Subject: [AskAVet] nutrena safe choice ingredient tags

Hi, all,
I just compared the ingredient tags on a new vs older bag, they changed their ingredients, and the first thing that struck me was the fact that "animal fat" is the last ingredient listed. I really didn't think equine, being plant eaters, were supposed to be eating animal anything?? Also, the older bag listed alfalfa meal as the first ingredient, now it's not even on there anywhere and "plant protein products" is listed as the first ingredient.
I have done a lot of comparisons of dog food, do they list ingredients on horse feed the same way? Greatest amount in the feed first to last?? Thanks!
