RE: [AskAVet] What to feed older, hard-keeper

You could start by adding corn oil to her feed. Start slowly, or she could get diarrhea. Aim for maybe a cup a day or more, depending on how she tolerates it; 1/2 in the morning and half in the evening. To put weight on a horse, it's calories that count. Oil and solid fat have 9 calories per gram, proteint and carb have 4 calories per gram.

Subject: [AskAVet] What to feed older, hard-keeper

Hey Folks - I currently feed Poulin Grain (a Northeast company.) I have an 18 y.o. paint mare who is stocky QH type, but a hard-keeper. You can usually see her ribs, but her belly is big. The vet says she's just not in condition. She also has navicular, but sound to ride with bute. She is rarely ridden, and then only short walks.

She is turned out 24/7 with a shed, on a dry lot. She is on schedule with rotated wormers.

This mare gets @4 qts/day of Endurance (pellets):
Crude Protein (Min) 11.0 %
Crude Fat (Min) 6.50 %

She gets @20lbs of hay/day. The hay has been less than optimal.

I'm wondering what you folks would recommend for a horse like this. You can see her here, though don't have a recent photo of her.
