Re: [AskAVet] Update on horses with lice

Hi Tim,

Thanks!!  Well, today unfortunately some of the eggs hatched, so lice were wiggling around with their shells from the egg still attached,. so it's onto bathing 29 horses I'm afraid!  But there appeared to be no older lice, just babies hatched out.

My parcel of vet goods has not arrived as yet, but I have my coconut oil, cream, shampoo and white vinegar all set to go.  If I start tomorrow morning, I hope to go and get them all done in one day, rather than bath half and have them mix together (Ute in mechanic shop, so must feed them all together where hay is dropped at gate)..

So, tomorrow it is....bath after bath after bath!!!

At least then they will all be able to mix again, without locking up half if I start today.

Hi all,

I gave the horses another feed of garlic bread this morning, I could not see any live lice, but I will inspect to double check again tomorrow.  The eggs are still there.  Horses still itching a little, but did not seem as harshly as usual.  I gave each horse the equivalent of 2 slices stale bread with margarine spread with a thin layer of minced garlic, Sunday night and again Monday morning.

My vet stuff ordered was dispatched today and should arrive tomorrow/next day after.

I will back off from the garlic now, as I could smell it on the Shetland this morning from a mile away, so it must be going through them.  I also suspect one of my horses may be feeling a bit off from the garlic, but the others are fine, he just has a very sensitive disposition, so I don't wanna push it.  And since I could smell it coming from the Shetland, seems like it is enough, as she reeked of it!!!

If I do not see any live lice tomorrow when I check more thoroughly, it appears garlic repels the live ones at any rate, as they were visible on them before.  A thorough check tomorrow will tell me more.

I have to order the Pestene Dust from another company and the pour on lice stuff for horses, as they do not stock it where I ordered my big order anymore.  But maybe they have included the cattle lice pour on?  They didn't mention it.

I will bath the worst horses down to the least worse on Tues/Wed/Thu.  Farrier coming Friday.

So far so good.  If I do not see any live lice tomorrow, then at least some of the job is done!!!

Hi,

Well, finally got time to do the garlic bread tonight.  some ate more than the others did, but I made plenty for them.  I am making another batch, so will give them some tomorrow, too.

Shall see how I go with that.   Then should get some time to do the next step thereafter should the living lice prevail.  They all need baths anyway, so the coconut baths next, and white vinegar for the eggs, which will take me a while, doing the worst first.

Over the internet I ordered Pestene dust for lice (couldn't find the Sevin anywhere in Australia) and also 6 pour on lice ones especially for horses (for the ones who won't want a bath!)...and at work they have a cattle one they have used successfully for years, so I ordered a bottle of that asking the company if it is suitable first (if it is), along with my ivermectin wormers, just so I am fully prepared, if I need to move up the levels.  Also booked in the farrier and teeth for them, for week after next, so total makeover for them!!!!

I am taking it up the levels, will be interesting to see what happens.

Kim xx
