I know even my vet when he last came asked what I feed and asked about it. He complained of too many folks having their horses choke.
I have had horses for 25 years now and I never wet it down in the beginning but it was sweet feed. As my feeding program changed and the type of work changed I started feeding complete feeds, that is when I started wetting it down. I noticed the first time the horses were a little put off but soon came to like it.
I use hot water run through the coffee maker in the winter by the time it hits the feed, I stir it and walk to the stalls dump in feeders the horses can eat it warm. Nice treat on a cold winters night. I found in the summer if I put gatorade in the mix they like it alot. My son's usually will share a beer with the grain. Horses like the hops.
I know that my horses will not eat their feed if it is too soupy so watch how much liquid is in the buckets before serving and if it too wet either add more complete feed or shredded beet pulp.
But if it is a pellet wet it be it beet pulp or grain, is a safe rule of thumb in my book. Just fill a cup with water and put a few pellets in and watch. Can you imagine how dry your mouth would get with one of those pellets in it. It is easy to imagine how a horse could choke on just about any feed that is pelleted.
Good Luck,
Sheri
