[AskAVet] Pelleted beet pulp

Yes, I would still soak the pelleted beet pulp, especially if you're feeding it to an older horse to get weight on.  Their teeth may not be so good and you don't want them to choke on it.

I have also used alfalfa pellets and do them the same way - add them to my pelleted feed, soak and then feed.  They can work well too, and sometimes the horse(s) get tired of the beet pulp.  Or, when I'm first introducing this to a new horse, I will put a few alfalfa pellets (not cubes) in the mix to entice them.  Once they start eating it, most horses will just gobble it down.

I HAVE used alfalfa cubes, but it takes much longer for them to "break down" and become soft.  I usually have to break them apart by hand and then add the pelleted feed.
