the native nonvenomous snake idea is great! however, sometimes they will get into stalls or arenas and frighten the horses or even some people. closed traps can be expensive, but they kill effectively and with no mess to clean up and no possibility of an animal eating the carcass. some rescues will give spayed/neutered cats to barns for pest control.
i've had to lug saddles around before. its no fun. another thing you could try is snake skins and used snake bedding... odd and gross, but effective.
