RE: [AskAVet] Re: infertil stallion

Hi Kim,

what will happen as the young studs mature is that there will be bloodshed. Instinct tells the stallion to drive off the youngsters. In the wild, this serves to prevent inbreeding. In an enclosed area, with no real place to run to, they could be seriously injured. The stallion will not be a problem with his own mares and their young offspring. He may attack the foals that he has not sired, even though from 'his' mares. He will definitely go after his own colts as they grow. They won't necessarily need to exhibit behaviors themselves to elicit this response.

BTW, it's highly likely that the three year olds do have sexual interest. It's been winter in your part of the world, right? Mares generally do not have estrus in the winter, but with spring coming, that may change quickly, unless they are in foal. Suggest you separate them now, unless you really want foals from these guys. And with two of them in the herd, it could get ugly.

Good luck with all this.

Hi CJ,

I was just wondering, when you were telling us about the wild stallions, how would it work in my herd, with several mares, a dominant mare and the stallion and two up and coming colts who are 3 with zero sexual interest right now?

Just say Tonto is not gelded.... will he reign and the other two never approach a mare, or would he fight the other two? Just hypothetical, this is. I do not plan on having three stallions!!!! I am just very interested in this whole topic.

I just recall a gentle stallion at a Stock Horse Stud I went to, he was in with many mares and their foals and was never a problem they said.

Thanks! Kim xoxoox

Out in the wild a colt is banished from his mother's band somewhere around 18 mo, give or take (and this seems to be related to the season he was born in and the geographical area). He meets up with others like him and they form a bachelor band. As they mature, they will each try to invade and take over a band of mares from an established stallion. This may take many attempts. Some are badly injured, some die. Some never make it.

Those who succeed then must take care of that band, until another upstart comes along. Life is not easy for a stallion in the wild.

Since I'm forever on a quest to learn and grow I have to ask.? I read a lot about "natural horsemanship" and maintaining the integrity of the horse.? They say he should be able to do what comes naturally to him and so on and we should learn how horses behave rather than forcing them to behave as we do so to speak.? So with that in mind,?what would?the stallion?do if he were out in the wild?? I'm really just wondering.?

I've been following this thread and finally decided to put in my 2 cents worth. I'm thinking of the frustration this poor stallion is feeling, being out with "his" mares and not being able to perform. While it may seem amusing to watch him trying to accomplish the deed, it just seems cruel to me. Either get him a mare he can actually penetrate or keep him away from mares or geld him. JMHO

This morning Tonto was with the mare that "mothered" him and he was standing beside her and err, how shall I put it, just copulating with nothing.? Then he tried, and again, he can't reach, so aborts.?
