Re: [AskAVet] Re: Bleach Bath?

I'm so glad you said?this.?? I agree with you 100%?? No one really knows all there is to know about horses.?? All we can do is share information and past experiences but even that's no guarantee.???I know less than nothing and I'm proud :)?? A wise woman once said, "When you get to a point in your life that you stop learning and think you know it all, you're dead"?? Working around horses, I take that statement literally.?? I ask questions and try to learn everyday.?? These guys weigh over a thousand pounds.? I will never stop trying to learn about em.?? I'm definitely an internet, book, magazine and video fanatic especially since this knowledge can save my life.? They say ya live and learn.?? I say you learn so you can live.? Thank you for sharing your experience :)

Lisa

It's good you're humble enough to ask questions. I'm fairly new as well, but in my years as a horse person I've noticed that horse people (of any level) tend to act like they know everything. In reality, no one really "knows" much about horses since a lot of things are theoretical. For example, I've heard literally HUNDREDS of ways to ride "the correct way."

Not so sure about the bleach, but I used fabric softener in my home-made fly spray. There's a lot of recipes like that out there with chemicals that obviously should not be used with horses. However, the recipes out there usually use a TEENSY WEENSY bit of these seemingly harmful chemicals, thus not harming the horse. When dealing with flies, I've noticed that you almost HAVE to used harmful chemicals (if you only knew what was in commercial fly spray!). But since flies are so small, you only have to use a teensy bit of these sorts of chemicals to kill them which is definately not enough to even bother a horse!

It's good you're humble enough to ask questions. I'm fairly new as well, but in my years as a horse person I've noticed that horse people (of any level) tend to act like they know everything. So the point that I'm trying to get to is it's good to consult MULTIPLE sources (internet, books, magazines, videos, vets, horsepeople, trainers, your own sense of right and wrong, etc.) before assuming that something is "right." Sadly, I've learned this from terrible personal experiences, but am telling this hoping you won't have to. Good luck and happy horse owning!

Some of the remedies and solutions people use for their horses have made my eyes pop but I don't know everything so I ask questions.? I know a guy who?washes his horse with laundry detergent and bleach...yes bleach.??He said that a person from animal control told him it keeps bugs off of him.? Is this true?
