Yeah I was glad the sheath cleaning was mentioned, it's a very important point as well as the point that while our stallions may be fumbling right now with their doodles, they may not forever.? This morning Tonto was with the mare that "mothered" him and he was standing beside her and err, how shall I put it, just copulating with nothing.? Then he tried, and again, he can't reach, so aborts.?
I have basically kept Tonto in with the mares since he was 1 1/2 when I bought him,? Like your stallion he was at the auction, though he was in good condition, but nobody wanted a colt there, so I saved him and another mare for $10.? Tonto was $200.? The $10 mare was almost dead.? But she reared Tonto as her son.?I love rescue horses, so I would adore you stallion!?
Just mentioning the dangers of them getting hurt which was raised, it is true, as at age 2 1/2 the old dominant mare jumped in with him and shook her tushy at Tonto, then booted him right where it hurts and he had to be rushed to hospital with a very swollen doodle.? He was ok, and while it was a somewhat comical moment, seriously he could have lost his manhood from this accident.? So, safety may not always be the stallion's fault but a mare's!!!?
I have never had to use an electric fence for a stallion, he has never jumped over any fence, though they can mate over fences.? Once a fence fell down, an old wooden one and I found him hiding from the mares around the corner in the sand arena!!!? People have also told me the stallion will fight the geldings, quite the opposite for me, the geldings rule my stallion!!!? I actually found Tonto to be better behaved in with the mares up until this year.?
But as we have both been told they can be fertile before age 1, so maybe we are just lucky!!
When Tonto is with mares he is more quiet and mostly just eats and it's when those mares start he does.? When over a fence, he used to call them and go crazy!? He was kept with a herd of geldings for ages.?
So, yeah, from my experience, I have never had to have an electric fence, but it depends on the stallion.? My 2 year old former colt was a maniac and even an electric fence did not stop him!!!!? 7 weeks after he was gelded he ran out and first thing he did was mount a mare!!!? So, we may have just lovely quiet stallions.? My two other colts now are dead quiet, they are 3 yr old TBs and have been with mares their whole lives.? They hang with a 3 year old TB mare as a trio and never bother her.? They are in with lots of mares and are just like foals around them, though this may change next year I think.
LOl, hehehe, yeah I would do anything to feed my horses, even probably mug an old granny LOL!!!? Anything for my Tonto!!? LOL!!!

Funny ya mention this Kim.??It was something I wondered because someone put it in my head.? I figured if push comes to shove I'd just keep?my stallion?with the geldings and away from the mares to guarantee there will be no unwanted foals.? One guy told me that even an electric fence will not keep a stallion away from a mare.? My guy stays away from the fences but we've never separated him from the mares.? I wonder....
All of my pictures are on my other computer and it crashed but I may have a few on my cell phone.? If I can find some I'll send em.? He's no show horse, infact he was a rescue horse, emaciated and half dead when my friend rescued him.? He was so skinny and weak, they had to help him into the trailer.? Now he's my precious angel.? I don't understand how anyone can starve a horse or any animal for that matter.? If I got to a place where I couldn't feed my horses, I'd stand on the corner with a sign "Free To A Good Home" before I let?them starve and get skinny.? It's just beyond cruel...it's evil.

Hey Lisa,
Yeah somehow this divine intervention keeps happening for Tonto!!!? I have never had a vet call in sick before.? So, something must be tellin me to rethink maybe LOL, though I was totally going to do it today.? But can't do much without the vet!!!
I am thinkin Tonto may be just like your equine guy, unable to procreate without a little help!!!? LOL.? But I still think that shorty TB broodmare I rescued has a bit of a smile on her face.? Maybe she knows how to show Tonto and the maiden mares do not.?
Tomorrow I am probably putting her and another mare and a pile of geldings in with Tonto, but keeping the other mares in another field just in case.? He lived quite happily for quite some time without mares in with him, so he can have this TB broodmare and maybe one other, and see how he goes.?
I am now in the situation anyway that I am soon working 14 plus days straight, so can't be around for him to get done.? That's why I planned it for early this week.? I wanted to make sure I was there in case he bled too much or got an infection. So one big reprieve.? Might get that TB mare scanned.
Anyway, lol, Tonto lives on.?? If you have any photos of your stallion Lisa, I would love to see.? My email is kim_hollingsworth@ yahoo.com. au?? Once I set up my scanner machine, I hope to whack some photos up on my Facebook of Tonto, etc :)))
LONG LIVE THE STALLIONS!!! !? (omg Tonto u dunno how close u came!)

Whoo Hoo!!!!? Way to go Tonto!!? I am happy for him that he get's a reprieve however long it lasts.? I think they call this?"divine intervention. "? I'm told by the previous owner that my stallion has never been able to mate with a mare without assistance so I'm not really worried about the foal population since I sure won't be "assisting him" in any way...lol.? This has all worked out for the best Kim.? You can look at it with fresh eyes in the morning but for now Tonto is happy and I'm happy for him.?

LOL OMG, this is so funny....
As you know I had everything ready to have my stallion gelded, went outside and waited for the vet and spent my last hours with him.? Suddenly the phone rang and I thought ok, so here's the vet.? He called to say he was very sick and could not come!!!
Oh, Lisa I know you will be jumping for joy!! he hehehe!!!?
I swear this horse is for some strange reason not meant to be gelded!!!? LOL.? Anyway I got a good look at him mounting mares and he rubs his private part up between their legs, kinda on their belly, lol, so maybe this is why he has no mares in foal.?
Anyway, I looked at Tonto and said, "Out ya go!!!" and he ran off to the mares I had already let out.? This is so funny.? The first few years, it was the horse flu that stopped him being gelded, no vet would come around to do him because we were uninfected with the flu...now it's this ha ha!? I swear this stallion for some unknown reason is just meant to be a stallion!?
Anyway, so for the time being Tonto is Tonto still.? (I can hear you cheering from here Lisa!!!) :))? Just when I was mentally prepared, too :)))? I'm secretly cheering, too....mmmmm. ...maybe I will get that sperm count done after all.? I dunno!!!? LOL!!? I certainly didn't expect this he hehehhe!!!

Just a little story...years ago, we brought home 2 1/2 brothers...they were clydes that were 3 y.o. stallions, the guy that had them had not had a vet,or farrier come out....they had no halters on...no handling since 8 months old...etc... well we brought these guys home, they were fairly wild.....in october....we worked with them to accept halters, taught them to lead and scheduled them for gelding...which happened the day after christmas... .merry christmas to them....long story short...the one stallion, aries, ended up a very personal guy with a personality. ..he was always doing funny stuff in the barn, playing with the cat, spitting water on anyone that would get close if he was drinking...etc. ..he was quite the playboy....when we had him gelded, his personality NEVER changed...he was the best guy we ever had....he was mr personality and at the end of the day...he was the one that would lean over his stall door and place his head on your
shoulder.... the
other brother was not mr personality, but he changed for the better.....he was more studdy than aries, but never the less turned into a great guy......so if your concerned,,, ,I agreee....you will make a great horse even better!!!? Good luck!!
Stacey

Hi Christy and Sarah!!
LOL!!!!? Wow you have all made me feel so much better with your cheeky quotes ha ha, they are good sayings!!!? It makes me feel like I am now not losing anything, but gaining!!!
Along with CJ's suggestions I have booked the guy in for gelding tomorrow afternoon, and I will be rereading your posts between now and then to reasure myself this is the best choice.
Had you 3 not replied, I would be still suffering this great headache I had, torn between doing it and not doing it.? I would love a surprise foal though, if he has happened to have done the deed.? But that one will be left to the Horse Gods!!!? I would be so excited if he actually did get one in foal, but after 5 years, LOL, the guy hasn't had too good a success rate!!!? But yeah if he has snuck one in, well, I will keep the lovely baby forever.
I can't thank you enough for all the advice!!!? As I again chickened out this morning and had his halter on and then just let him out and told him to run!!!? That's two mornings in a row. :))
But tomorrow morning he can stay in with some friends and I will put the halter on and be happy for him.
If there is no foal next year, well it wasn't meant to be.? The guy had a good innings, more than most colts ever have.? I still have 2 other colts, but they are dead quiet.? But I dare say next year, they will be lining up for the procedure, too.?
My place is really strange....I have 2 colts, a stallion, geldings and mare and no pregnancies and they all live together.... but that said, this status quo may not last!!! :)))? Better to be safe than sorry.
THANKS AGAIN!!!? You have made me feel better about this.? I will let you know how he goes.? I think my fear was last time I was at a gelding, the anaesthetic failed and I had to sit on the horse's neck and he threw me around until they finish the job, it was just awful.? Anymore anaesthetic they said would kill him, so it was just hideous to be involved in that.? I felt so sorry, I bought the poor fellow after the procedure, because I never wanted to see him suffer again.? He leads a happy life with me still, but gee he was an unruly colt, just WILD!!!? But my stallion is just lovely, but I feel now this is for the best, as CJ said, when he gets older it will be harder on him.? His behaviour is changing and so yeah, I may not have my little angel for much longer, the devil in him is coming out hahha!!
