Re: [AskAVet] What to feed older, hard-keeper

Laurie,

Loaves of bread, whole grain if possible from the day old bread store. Feed
her no grain as she's not digesting what she doesn't chew. There's lots of
feed options, but high fiber and high starch/carbs *that are digestible* are
what she needs. Feed her a pelleted "complete" feed (12% to 15% fiber) and a
loaf or two of bread per feeding. She'll need twice the volume of feed (4
qts per feeding instead of 2 for instance) because of the high fiber, and
she may not eat it all at once, but "browse" on it all day. You can add
calories with oil or rice bran but that will also raise her metabolism and
the added energy without activity will result in a fat, unhealthy horse!
Lean isn't necessarily bad, but she does need good nutrition (and more
exercise!).

Dorothy and CJ probably have some good options as well. Choose what works
best for you and your horse. Oh, and check her for parasites (fecal exam,
twice, two weeks apart), and keep her teeth floated. But I'm sure you
already knew that! lol

Blessings!
