Re: [AskAVet] Stallion infertility???

Hi CJ,

Thanks for the great answer.  I was laughin so much when you said sounds like he might be infertile, LOL!!!

Very true what you said about people being afraid, the vet students were all extremely scared of him, yet I know he is a gentle fellow, yet you are right.  It would be hard if I moved somewhere where there were mares over a fence!!!

I have taken on all you have said, especially about it being harder on him the older he gets!!  And the mares and every horse in the place has been getting scratches and scrapes lately, I believe due to his increasing stallion behaviour.

LOL!!!  Oh the sperm count would be funny.  The vet is mystified as to how he has lived with them all for 5 years and not one in foal....but I have a sneakin suspicion that this year things may change.  His behaviour has heightened, and he is now standing on the top of the dam wall, watching his herd like a King, which he never did before.

You have given me lots of feedback that I never thought about.  Plus, when he went to the hospital, initially he had to be in the intensive care section, because he was a stallion!!!  But then they realised how sweet he was and he was in next to others with no problem.  So he is a sweetie, but I can see his behaviour getting more stallionish.

Stallions really are different from geldings, IMHO. I like handling them and working them. BUT, even if your stallion is infertile (and it sounds like yours might be), there is always the issue of how he is handled so as not to be a problem in the neighborhood or at the stable. Lots of people are very afraid of stallions. In one area where I lived, my very well mannered stallion was regarded as worse than a pitbull (there's another misunderstood bunch of animals, but I digress). There is also the issue of stallion behaviors around other horses- a couple stallions fighting can end up with pretty gruesome injuries to both horses.

I think- and this in PURELY personal opinion- if you have the place for him and can handle him and keep him and other horses safe, then do what you want to. Otherwise, geld him. And remember, the older he gets, the harder it could be on him if you decide then to have it done.

You can call your vet to ask about doing a sperm count. I'm sure you can imagine what that will entail.

Ok here is my dilemma.

I adore my stallion.  He is sweet, quiet, etc.  I locked him up to get him gelded today and just could not go through with it.  So I told him to run and let him out.

Is there a test that can tell you if they are infertile?  If so how does it work?

Even though he has been with mares for 5 years, there is not one in foal, though he has shown interest etc.

It is very difficult for me to make this decision, I guess I love his personality and watching him and his antics and am hoping he might be infertile, which may or may not mean I don't have to geld him?  He is easy to handle.  Both testes are visible and he obviously likes mares....

It may sound silly, but I was just hoping for some advice as I just could not go through with it today, even though in the past I gelded two colts.  There is just something so loveable about him being a stallion, and I guess I am scared of losing that.  He is 5 years old.

Thanks.  Kim
