Re: [AskAVet] safe choice ingredient tags/teddi

Seminole only sells feed as far north as Landrum, SC, near Tryon, NC.
They sell in Florida, parts of Georgia, and South Carolina. :-( I used
to make the 3 hour drive (one way!) every other month to pick some up,
but when I got a moldy bag, the feed store (The Farm House in Landrum)
refused to reimburse me, saying my storage was at fault. They lost a
customer, and I lost the best feed in the country. It's just too far to
drive without having customer support.

Now that i have compared my feed ingredient tags, no wonder there are problems on this feed. I don't think any of the feed tags I have read up on had added iron, though. i really want to stay away from a sweet feed as i am also feeding a pony a little and i just don't think the sweets are good for them. they are both older and i don't want any health issues from a higher sugar feed, either. Not to mention flies and freezing problems...Are you using a pelleted feed? if so, what is it, or what brand could you recommend that won't break the bank. the safe choice is $12 a 50lb bag, not too bad, i didn't think, i will go through 3-4 bags a month, maybe more in winter. Thanks again for the reminder...

I took my horses in for teeth floats and pulled blood just for kicks and giggles. Good thing I did they were all anemic. I pulled more blood and had it tested elsewhere to make sure it was correct and it was. They had to switch feeds and go on red cell and have additional supplements, I asked the other owners I know who feed it if their horses were anemic. Most don't pull blood work but they started to and EVERY horse came up anemic. I would not recommend feeding this feed.

Their old formula had no animal fat and the first ingredient was alfalfa meal...I guess it's a lesson learned, check your feed tag every time you buy, unless it's a locked formula...NO substitutions allowed...

I really didn't think equine, being plant eaters, were supposed to be eating animal anything?? Also, the older bag listed alfalfa meal as the first ingredient, now it's not even on there anywhere and "plant protein products" is listed as the first ingredient.
> I have done a lot of comparisons of dog food, do they list ingredients on horse feed the same way? Greatest amount in the feed first to last?? Thanks!
