Re: [AskAVet] infertil stallion

Hi Stacey,

Thanks for this info.  I was just looking today actually at how clean his manhood looks, compared to how crusty the other boys' look!  Oh, so he will figure it out eventually?  Oh OH!!!!  Yeah I tend to agree with you on that one, because I just have this feelin he may not reach the taller mares but I look at that shorty mare I have and think, mmmm, you look mighty pleased with yourself lately.

I did not think of infection, but you have raised one good point!  I do not want a bunch of mares with infections.

Definitely tomorrow the luckiest stallion in the world is going to have two mares only with him and geldings.  This cleaning issue is of great concern, though.  I think I might actually see how he goes back how he was.... with geldings only and mares over the fence.  I hope that works for now.

There is actually a dominant gelding, who, every time Tonto used to approach a mare, he would shunt him away.  I think maybe if I try that situation and he is settled, I will be happy.  If not I am now thinking maybe that little TB mare in with him.  Mmmm, so much more to think about than I knew.  But, thank you Stacey, I will now try just geldings, then just one mare and see what works.  I am glad you told me this.  I have never really imagined STDs in horses, but thank god you told me.

I am so torn with this all.  But I can't not work the school holidays, so I have to come up with some viable alternative for him for now.  I appreciate any advice, and thanks for being so nice about it all.  It has helped me think more clearly about how to re organise them all tomorrow.

Hey Kim....I am all for choice and not trying to save the world. lol...so I wont say much, but if he is trying to mount them, he will figure it out eventually.. ..and that is choice...lol. ..But my only concern with him running with mares and attempting to breed is whether or not he is breeding them now or later...unless you are cleaning him daily....he could end up giving every one of your mares an infection due to bacteria and debris....this also could be why your mares are not settling.... we breed clydesdales and I do pasture breed on occasion if the mare has an issue, but the stud gets and mare gets cleaned, mare's tail wrapped and then they are turned out together.... but this is my opinion...there is a higher rate of infection with pasture breeding with no clean up....especially if you have a mare that came to you with an infection already....just some info...anyway. ..sounds like your checkbook is safe for awhile...whatever decision it is you
make....good luck!

LOL OMG, this is so funny....

As you know I had everything ready to have my stallion gelded, went outside and waited for the vet and spent my last hours with him. Suddenly the phone rang and I thought ok, so here's the vet. He called to say he was very sick and could not come!!!

Oh, Lisa I know you will be jumping for joy!! he hehehe!!!

I swear this horse is for some strange reason not meant to be gelded!!! LOL. Anyway I got a good look at him mounting mares and he rubs his private part up between their legs, kinda on their belly, lol, so maybe this is why he has no mares in foal.

Anyway, I looked at Tonto and said, "Out ya go!!!" and he ran off to the mares I had already let out. This is so funny. The first few years, it was the horse flu that stopped him being gelded, no vet would come around to do him because we were uninfected with the flu...now it's this ha ha! I swear this stallion for some unknown reason is just meant to be a stallion!

Anyway, so for the time being Tonto is Tonto still. (I can hear you cheering from here Lisa!!!) :)) Just when I was mentally prepared, too :))) I'm secretly cheering, too....mmmmm. ...maybe I will get that sperm count done after all. I dunno!!! LOL!! I certainly didn't expect this he hehehhe!!!

Just a little story...years ago, we brought home 2 1/2 brothers...they were clydes that were 3 y.o. stallions, the guy that had them had not had a vet,or farrier come out....they had no halters on...no handling since 8 months old...etc... well we brought these guys home, they were fairly wild.....in october....we worked with them to accept halters, taught them to lead and scheduled them for gelding...which happened the day after christmas... .merry christmas to them....long story short...the one stallion, aries, ended up a very personal guy with a personality. ..he was always doing funny stuff in the barn, playing with the cat, spitting water on anyone that would get close if he was drinking...etc. ..he was quite the playboy....when we had him gelded, his personality NEVER changed...he was the best guy we ever had....he was mr personality and at the end of the day...he was the one that would lean over his stall door and place his head on your
shoulder.... the
other brother was not mr personality, but he changed for the better.....he was more studdy than aries, but never the less turned into a great guy......so if your concerned,,, ,I agreee....you will make a great horse even better!!! Good luck!!

Stacey

Hi Christy and Sarah!!

LOL!!!! Wow you have all made me feel so much better with your cheeky quotes ha ha, they are good sayings!!! It makes me feel like I am now not losing anything, but gaining!!!

Along with CJ's suggestions I have booked the guy in for gelding tomorrow afternoon, and I will be rereading your posts between now and then to reasure myself this is the best choice.

Had you 3 not replied, I would be still suffering this great headache I had, torn between doing it and not doing it. I would love a surprise foal though, if he has happened to have done the deed. But that one will be left to the Horse Gods!!! I would be so excited if he actually did get one in foal, but after 5 years, LOL, the guy hasn't had too good a success rate!!! But yeah if he has snuck one in, well, I will keep the lovely baby forever.

I can't thank you enough for all the advice!!! As I again chickened out this morning and had his halter on and then just let him out and told him to run!!! That's two mornings in a row. :))

But tomorrow morning he can stay in with some friends and I will put the halter on and be happy for him.

If there is no foal next year, well it wasn't meant to be. The guy had a good innings, more than most colts ever have. I still have 2 other colts, but they are dead quiet. But I dare say next year, they will be lining up for the procedure, too.

My place is really strange....I have 2 colts, a stallion, geldings and mare and no pregnancies and they all live together.... but that said, this status quo may not last!!! :))) Better to be safe than sorry.

THANKS AGAIN!!! You have made me feel better about this. I will let you know how he goes. I think my fear was last time I was at a gelding, the anaesthetic failed and I had to sit on the horse's neck and he threw me around until they finish the job, it was just awful. Anymore anaesthetic they said would kill him, so it was just hideous to be involved in that. I felt so sorry, I bought the poor fellow after the procedure, because I never wanted to see him suffer again. He leads a happy life with me still, but gee he was an unruly colt, just WILD!!! But my stallion is just lovely, but I feel now this is for the best, as CJ said, when he gets older it will be harder on him. His behaviour is changing and so yeah, I may not have my little angel for much longer, the devil in him is coming out hahha!!
