Lice are species specific....meaning lice from one species won't be eating on another...they might hitch a ride but usually not even that....we don't smell or taste like dinner for instance to the lice on dogs or goats or chickens or horses.  Lice DO live in blankets, old wood (like old sheds) etc.  and are really nasty about spring time (which it is in your neck of the woods I think).  You can use Sevin dust on them (get it at garden supply stores or ranch/farm supply stores...cheaper than the dust specifically for horses and works very well).  Worming with ivermectin will kill the ones eating if they are the blood sucking kind (there are two kinds for horses...ones that bite and suck blood and ones that eat off of dead skin cells and dandruff....the dust will get them).  Treat at least twice about 10-14 days apart as the adults will die with either treatment but eggs will hatch out afterward.  Shampoos are fine but tend to be expensive and have
to be done a couple times for the same reason.  The pour on stuff (Spot On and the like) also work but again, are expensive.  The biggest problem that lice create is the rubbing and damage to the coat (other than the yuck factor for owners that is) and a severe infestation of the blood sucking kind can result in anemia esp in young or debilitated older animals.

Hi there,

Yikes!!!  I have never had any experience with lice in horses, but I have had a vet out to them this week and they certainly have LICE!!.  I am ordering a bulk load of lice treatment for horses as he said I must shampoo/treat them all twice with it, but would love any other advice, too.

The old horses at my work had lice and were treated...while vet said it is BAD year for lice this year, I can't help thinking I bought them home on my clothes and transferred them here, as in ten years I have never had a horse with lice. 

There are pour-on lice treatments you do once, are they effective enough, a stripe of stuff down the horse's back?  There are also shampoo style ones.

Is there anything I can do to relieve their itching until I get the lice products ordered in? 

Some have hair loss and I have eggs and living lice, too.  As it is almost springtime only one horse is still rugged.  I do not ride them at all.  Vet suggested dividing them up as they are washed, so that the washed ones do not mix with the unwashed.  I have about six fields.  Would love any further advice/remedies.

I feel itchy talking about it.

I new round bail of hay just went in the pasture. His cough sounds like a "dry tickle in the throat" He coughs once or twice at one time any then there are several minutes without a cough. Still no fever, loss of appetite, runny nose, or other oddness. Will a flu shot help if that is what it is? He is due the first week of Sept. anyway, I just don't want to make things worse by giving it.

Subject: [AskAVet] pony cough

I have a pony who is over eight years old, but unsureof exact age. He started coughing yesterday and is still coughing today. He does not have a runny noseor any other symptoms that I can see. What should I do for him? Should a our vet come out? Or is there something I can do here?
