Re: [AskAVet] strangles.

Generally no....it is a streptococcal bacteria but specific to horses....however if your immune system is compromised I don't know if it could then or not.  You can check with your dr....streptococcus equi is the name of the bug.  Shouldn't cross to your dog either and dark feces could be blood from either something he ate (my Aussie ate a placenta the other day...crapped really stinky almost black for a day and a half...also extremely smelly gas!) or from something like ulcers.  Would probbly be a good idea to have the dog seen.  Normal temps are close to human....can't remember exact figure.

is strangles contagious to dogs or humans??. I have been going through chemotherapy for the last 4 months. And have a week immune system.. But my dog who goes to the barn with me that has been exposed to strangles (we just found out last nite) has been very larthargic. And has been pooping very dark poop.?? Im taking her to the vet on monday. And the horse too.. Also whats a normal temp range for dogs? Im assuming close to humans and horses. Thanks sarah
