Re: [AskAVet] Re: Whole horse herd has lice!!!

Hi everyone,

Well what a day chasing lice treatments!!!

I went to the supermarket first, saw the price of the garlic bread and decided that I could buy some bread, margarine and the bottled minced garlic and organic crushed garlic as a cheaper alternative for so many horses!!  So they will get that when the bread is a day old.  6 loaves of bread and huge tub of margarine and 4 bottles of garlic!

Then I saw a bar of coconut oil soap so I got it just in case I found nothing else.

Then came across the white vinegar, got 4 large bottles of it.

I saw a shampoo with coconut oils as one of the top ingredients, so got that.  It was not Suave though.

Then found some coconut cream 100% and got 4 cans of the stuff.  Most of the cans were 50% coconut, so I found a 100% one.

I went to 4 garden centres, absolutely nobody had heard of Sevin Dust and all the stuff on the shelves had a different ingredient and was marked toxic or low toxic, but had all animal warnings on the back, so I could not find it anywhere.

I then went to the saddlery to see the prices of lice treatments compared to the internet prices I could get it at.  I almost died!!!  A pour on to treat 2 horses was $40 at saddlery, only $27 on internet!!!  All of the saddlery stuff was hideously expensive, so I have decided to order via internet, should what I could pick up today fail to work for my horses.

I looked everywhere for coconut oil and gave up, then saw an Asian grocery store and thought I would try!!  3 large bottles of coconut oil waiting in there for me!! YAY!  100% coconut oil.  I was so excited!!!

So, that was all I came up with on my shopping spree.  I found great prices on the internet for any further treatment that I need, so would have to settle for Ince Pestene dust for animals with lice, some sort of wash for lice and a pour on for my difficult horses, but at least it is all there on the internet at good prices, should what I picked up today not work for me.  Oh and the wormers I will get off the internet, too, as they are heaps cheaper for me.  Wouldn't you think the saddlery would use its brains and when I said I have 29 horses with lice needing wormers and in addition annual vaccines, that they would use their business sense and take the sale at the internet prices???  No, so they missed out on a near 4 figure sale by not price matching, silly in my opinion!!!

I checked out the human lice preparations and some are based on natural oils and some are based on chemicals, too.

Well, at least I got a start today, shall let you know how I go!!!

Thanks again so very much!!!

Kim xxx

If they haven't been wormed in a while you'll want to start off with a
'lighter' wormer (safeguard or strongid) first then move on to the ivomec.
At least that's what my vet told me when I rescued one in bad shape.
