Re: [AskAVet] Re: footing

It was just an idea we tossed out there, we aren't going to use it after we did the research.

Hi,
I am not sure if asphalt would harm healthy horse hooves, but asphalt contains hugely carcinogenic substances to humans in tar and chemical compounds contained in it. You are not supposed to walk on it bare foot for long periods, or inhale the fumes in any way, and I am also not certain if one could guarantee no harmful vapors (volatile organic vapors and miniscule dusts) ever. Add to that: It would have been ground to reveal more surface and more potentially harmful stuff.

It may be cheap, but it is definitely a health hazard too great to risk in my eyes. And it´s not a driveway we are talking about.

There was never any dust.. It was in partial shade. So if ur in a sunny hot area. I dont know how hot it would get. This was in northern ohio.. But sand gets pretty blasted hot in my opinion.. I believe she mixed it with sand and rubber shreddings eventually. she still did the lmestone screening underneith. then dirt. Then screenings and then the footing.. But there was never a puddle no matter how hard it rode. And she was a classical dressage and hunter jumper trainer.. She also had the mulch indoor arena.. Way cheaper then any sand or whatever footing. And i believe she got the shredded asphalt for next to nothing.. Sarah from Ohio
