Re: [AskAVet] lumps

Tell them to take a deep breath, relax and realize it is the horse version of strep throat....usually not a huge problem and most horses recover nicely within a couple weeks at most.  Cleanliness is good (as with any contagious illness) and taking care of any sick horses should be done AFTER taking care of the healthy ones.  Separation of sick from healthy by 30 feet or so will cut down on contagiousness.  Antibiotics are recommended by some vets, not by others (who fear driving the infection into lymph nodes deeper in the body where they cause the much more serious "bastard strangles").  After all have been healthy for a couple weeks any suseptible horses have probably either had the disease and are recovered or have some immunity either from previous exposure/illness in their life or from vaccination.  It has nothing to do with breed of horse.  After a horse recovers do a good cleansing of stall/gates/fences/water tanks/buckets etc with strongish
bleach water or novulsan.

ok. I know u guys just finished talking about this. But i was just informed tonite that one of the horses at our barn was trailered with a yearling that potentially could have strangles.. From what i was told the yearling had a pussy absess under his chin. But no fever or super snotty nose... There is a canter lady at our barn who is kinda a novice with horses.. Her daughters pony was also at the show.. It was at a local fairground.. . Well. they freaked out and all of a sudden every throughbred has strangles... Only one horse had a temp of 101.4... and a few do have lumps on either side of there necks.. All throughbreds. . But no one has a snotty nose.. Or is listless or off there feed. I told them not to freak out untill they know what is going on in the first place... We have had horses show all the signs of strangles in the past and it not b strangles... i know every horse reacts different.. And this was a week ago that the barn was exposed.. any
ideas or suggestions? ? Thanks sarah
