For some stupid reason no one wanted to go the extra funds to do the research. My son helped with a necropsy on a PMU colt with Bastard Strangles. He developed strep the next morning took him in the doctor. Doctor did the strep test came back possitive for A typical Strep. Doctor wanted to send it to Cornell and Cornell said no, local vet didn't want to culture, etc. So YES, you can get it and more than likely so can the dog just will not test out as the normal strep.
Doctor did the research there is one case study on record from late 19th century no other research has been done on this since. It is an area open for investigation.
Now my experience is that people that have had A typical strep they usually don't get strep throat ever again once recovered. A typical strep also causes a really bad sore throat and you need drugs it will not go away on it's own. I had strep once as a teen but was always at the barns. I have never had it again. I now assume I had A typical Strep. All the other family members get strep at least annually. My eldest (never again) and I never get it. Had neighbor in NYS that also had Step after exposure to horses in with strep in college. She has never gotten strep again.
So it would be interesting if some research was done.
But, Strep does cross speices, just changes name.
